Chapter Ten
Andrea and Kyle had just brought in the last treasure from a morning of checking out garage sales when her phone rang. âHelloâOh, hi LouiseâGreat! Sure, Iâll meet you there.
âExcuse me.â Andrea shepherded Emily and Simon into the living room and settled them in with their toys and then came back to the kitchen. âI need to call Janet. Big change of plans. Then Iâll make us some lunch.â
âTell me what you want to eat and Iâll get things started,â Kyle said.
Andrea pulled some packages out of the fridge and handed them to Kyle. Then she called Janet.
âI just got a call from my sister-in-law. Sheâs arriving late this afternoon. Is there any chance you could babysit for a few hours? I need to meet her at the hospital and I donât want to bring the children.â Andrea looked at the matched pair of Winnie-the-Pooh lamps on her kitchen table and mentally crossed her fingers.
âI had plans for this evening but Iâm sure I can change them. This sounds very important. What time?â
Andrea breathed a sigh of relief. âIf you could be here by four that would be great. Iâll get their supper started if you donât mind presiding over the table. Iâll grab something at the hospital.â
She watched Kyle opening her cabinet doors looking for dishes and walked over to the right one and opened it for him. They smiled at each other.
âThanks so much, Janet. I didnât mean to ask for emergency babysitting before you officially start.â Andrea said goodbye. .
âSorry, Kyle. It looks like my plans have all changed. Weâll have to take a rain check on dinner, and to make things worse, my mother- and father-in-law are arriving tomorrow. Much as I hate the thought, I have to meet with them. I need to find babysitting for tomorrow as well.â
Andrea ran a hand through her hair as she stood with the other on her hip. âI have no idea what to do. Val and her friends, including Janet and Forbesia, my back-up sitter, are all going on a Sunday afternoon tour somewhere.â
âYou can leave them with me at the farm,â he said. âI really donât mind. Maybe I can show Simon how to pee like a boy so he can get out of diapers.â
Andrea laughed. âI hadnât even thought of that part of his potty training. Iâm missing the key part for demonstration purposes.â
Andrea opened the fridge door to bring out some apple juice to go with the sandwiches Kyle had assembled. âI donât think I have any choice but to take you up on your offer for tomorrow. Will your father mind, do you think?â
âIt will do him good to be around children,â Kyle said. âTrust me, beneath that curmudgeonly crust there is a good heart. Before my mother died, I had a wonderful but shy father. I know heâs still in there. Maybe Emily and Simon can help him come out.â
âDo you mind practicing your babysitting skills now, while I go have a
